International
Maritime Signal Flags.
|
Maritime
signal flags, the 'Code of Signals', have been used since they were first adopted
in 1931. By flying individual flags, most of which have specific meanings,
a lot of information can be conveyed, even if the sender and receiver speak different
languages. They can also be flown as a sequence of flags to form words. Nowdays,
each letter is is represented by a separate flag, that can also convey a message,
thus the letter 'O' also means 'man overboard'.
Although modern communications
have replaced the older signal flag methods, commercial vessels still use the
unambiguous messages conveyed by flags such as 'N' over 'C' ( meaning "I
am in distress"). Naval vessels still may transmit messages by means of signal
flags when there is a need to maintain radio silence. _____________________________________________________________ Above
each signal flag is the letter the flag represents, next is the phonetic name
of the letter. To the right of the signal flag is the command the signal flag
represents. All
these signal flags can be printed separately at approximately 210mm [8½"]
across. To print a signal of your choice, click 'Print', set your printer
to landscape, then print. _________________________________________________________
