Iran is located in southwest Asia and borders the Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf, and Caspian Sea. Its mountains have helped to shape both the political and the economic history of the country for several centuries. The mountains enclose several broad plateaus, on which major agricultural and urban settlements are located. Until the 20C, when major highways and railroads were constructed through the mountains to connect the population centres, these tended to be relatively isolated from one another. |

After the overthrow of the Monarcy in 1979 the Victors introduced the Tricolore of green, white and red, with a red central device. These colours have been Irans since the late 19C. At the junction of the green/white and the white/red is the stylised Kufic inscriptions of Allahu Akbar repeated 22 times as victory in the revolution occured on the 22 day of the 11th month of the Iranian calendar.
