Official Name : RÉPUBLICA DE MOÇAMBIQUE (Republic of Mozambique)
Total Area: 800,000 square kilometres
Population: 22 million persons (2011 estimate).
Languages: Portuguese (official), Swahili, Bantu languages.
Religions: Traditional 60%, Christian 30%, Muslim 10%.
Capital: Maputo, population 1.6 million. (2009)
Currency: Metical, divided into 100 centavos.
Independant: War ended with a cease fire on September 8, 1974, resulting in a negotiated independence in 1975.
Geography: The Zambezi River bisects the country flowing southeast and empties into the Mozambique Channel south of Chinde. South of the Zambezi, the terrain is predominently semiarid lowland savannah with a coastal belt characterised by mangrove swamps and sandy beaches. North of the fertile Zambezi Delta, the coastal plain is narrower, backed by a rugged interior savannah plateau abutting the tropical vegetation of the northwest highlands.
Flag: The flag is based on the flag of the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO). This flag, was used for a brief period after the country gained its independence from Portugal, similar to the current flag but without the emblem.It was adopted on May 1, 1983.
