| Topography: | Poland
is divided into five zones from north to south. The largest is the central lowlands
that is narrow in the west expanding as it extends eastward. The terrain
in the central lowlands is flat, cut by several major rivers, including the Odra
(Oder), which defines the Silesian Lowlands in the southwest, and the Wisla (Vistula),
which defines the lowland areas of east-central Poland. To the south are the
lesser Poland uplands, formed by the gently sloping foothills of the Sudeten and
Carpathian mountain ranges and the uplands that connect the ranges in southcentral
Poland. The third topographic area is formed by the Sudeten and Carpathian
ranges. Within Poland, these ranges hold substantial human habitation, the Carpathians
being densely populated. The rugged form of the Sudeten range derives from the
geological shifts that formed the later Carpathian uplift. The highest elevation
is in the Sudeten at 1,602 meters, in the Karkonosze Mountains. The Carpathians
in Poland are the highest and most picturesque mountains in the country. They
are the northernmost edge of a much larger range that extends into the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, and Romania. In Poland the range includes two major
basins, the Oswiecim (Auschwitz) and Sandomierzs. -text edited from Wikipedia. Mount
Rysy 2499m (8119 ft) in the Tatra Mountains, near the Slovak border, is the highest
peak in Poland. |
