| Geography: |
Samoa comprises two main islands, Upolu and Savai'i and a number of smaller islands,
2 being inhabited. On Savai'i, the rugged, volcanic interior rises to a maximum
elevation of 1858 metres at Silsili. On Upolu the highest peak is 1097 metres.
Both islands exhibit similar geographical features, a mountainous central region
covered by dense tropical forest cut by swift torrential rivers, encompassed by
a narrow coastal plain and coral reefs. 19% of the land is arable and 47% is forested. |
