Official Name:

JAMHURIYADDA DIMUGRADIGA SOMALIYA (Somali Democratic Republic)

Land Area: 637,660 square kilometres / 246,660 square miles.
Population: 8,592,300 (est July 2005). Density 13.5 persons per square kilometre.
Languages: Somali (official), Arabic, English (in North), Italian (South).
Religions: Sunni Muslim 99%.
Capital: Mogadishu (Mugdiisho). Population 740,000)
Currency: Somali shilling, divided into 100 centesimi.
Geography: To the north, the semiarid Guban coastal plain is backed by a mountainous belt stretching from the easternmost tip of the horn to the northwestern tip of the Ethiopian border. To the south, the arid coastal plain rises inland to the Haud Plateau and the flat land of the deep south. Between the Jubba and the Shabelle rivers, the soils ar fertile with considerable area meadow and pastureland.
