The fertile western coastal strip is well watered, intensely cultivated and densely inhabited. Eastward are the Alawite and ash-Sharqi mountain ranges divided by the Orontes river, and beyond this lies the eastern reaches of the Syrian Desert. 27% of the land is arable, and 3% is forested. |

The first modern flag of Syria was adopted in 1920, when Syria became a French mandated territory. This flag was similar to the current flag of Jordan with the green and white colors reversed. Syria has had six national flags (of four distinct designs) since independence from France in 1946.
