Tonga consists of approximately 170 island, of which 36 are inhabited. The Tongan
archipelago is divided physically into 2 parallel belts; low fertile coralline-limestone
formations in the east, higher volcanic terrain in the west. The 3 principle island
groups are Vava'u, Ha'apai and Tongatapu. Surface water on on the nonvolcanic
isles is negligible. 25% of the land area is arable, 12% forested. |
